In Los Angeles any fruit which is accessible from a public area (sidewalk, parking lot, etc), and can be picked without trespassing is, by law, public property.
Fallen Fruit is a website which maps locations of publicly available fruit.
Since I'm not working today, I'm off to pick some free avocados!

That's so frickin' cool!
It is cool, isn't it?
For some reason the 'wild' avocados here have a lemony taste that the store-bought one's don't have. Well worth the effort of hauling my ass around town to find them.
I want to go to LA just to pick fruit and veggies :-)
ya, I'm a dork like that.. this could really entertain me for days in LA.
That's good to know. My neighbor has a HUGE pomegranate hanging from a tree in his yard that I can juuust reach if I climb a ladder in the dead of night. Like, tonight.
I saw a case the other day on one of the "Judge Shows" (Joe Brown? Judy? Hachett? Alex?) where a passing motorist got into a fistfight with a home owner when he stopped to pick avocadoes from the tree in this guy's yard. Turns out, the dude had picked 25 avocadoes from the homeowner's tree. The plucker said, "I had to make a lot of guacamole. I really like it."
There was apparently an assault when the homeowner pelted the motorist's truck with the avocadoes the dude had dropped when he was caught. This was somewhere in the L.A. area. I like the concept of "assault with a tasty weapon."
